In our previous article we discussed measures to take prior to the strike of a hurricane. These safety measures include staying tuned into reliable weather forecasts, having a family emergency plan, an emergency kit, and home preparation. In this article we will discuss what to do if a hurricane watch or warning is issued.
A hurricane watch is issued if hurricane conditions are possible within a specified area. Hurricane watches are issued 48 hours prior to the anticipated tropical-storm-force winds in the area. When a hurricane watch is issued make sure your family reviews the emergency plan and makes sure the emergency kit is stocked. Make sure your home is secured by bringing in outdoor furniture and decorations. Make sure to fill your vehicle’s gas tank and consider having extra fuel containers for a generator.
A hurricane warning is issued when conditions are expected within a specified area. When a hurricane warning is issued, follow evacuation orders from local authorities and turn off utilities before leaving. Stay tuned into emergency channels and follow instructions from emergency management. During the storm, stay indoors away from windows and use a NOAA Weather Radio for real-time updates.
