How Has Building Code Adapted? (Part Two)

Previously, we began to discuss how building codes have adapted to the lessons of natural disasters. We discussed wind resistance and what is accounted for and done to mitigate it. In this second part, we will continue discussing the evolution of building codes in response to natural disasters.

In certain areas that are prone to flooding, building codes often require structures to be elevated above a certain height to minimize flood risk. Similarly, this also encompasses building sealing techniques. Codes now emphasize sealing the building envelope which helps prevent water intrusion.

When worst comes to worst however, many codes now require the inclusion of designated safe areas within buildings. These are mainly found in regions susceptible to hurricanes or tornadoes, but these spaces provide shelter during extreme weather. Overall, the higher standards in materials allow more durable and resilient buildings that are better equipped for the unexpected!

We hope you found this second part on how building codes have adapted over time to be insightful on the destructive power of hurricanes and how we have continued since.
